1. develop his love for theatre.

e.g. develop a taste for opera; develop a friendship.

2. make a living: 謀生

7. lay the foundation of 打下…的基礎，　奠定…的基礎

e.g. lay new railroad track. 鋪設新鐵軌 to lay a carpet on the floor在地板上鋪地毯

He laid the foundations of his success by study and hard work.

Careful planning laid the foundations for the nation's economic miracle.

8. be believed to 被認為:

e.g. At 115, Mrs Jackson is believed to be the oldest person in the country.

The four men are widely believed to have been killed by their captors.

9. servant: 傭人， 僕人

e.g. Fire and water may be good servants, but bad masters.

[諺]水火是忠僕, 用之不慎成災主。

A politician should be a servant of the people.

10. whale:

12. collision: n.碰撞, 衝突

e.g. The school bus was involved in a collision with a truck.

學校的公交車與一輛卡車發生了碰撞

Mike had a collision with another skier and broke his leg.

13. companion: 伴侶；同伴

e.g. a travelling companion 旅伴

He was my only Chinese companion during my stay in Australia.

14. overboard： adv向船外；落水

He fell overboard. 他從船上掉入水中。

18. pass through: 經過，穿過,經歷

e.g. The river passes through our land.這條河流經我們的國土.
