She promised to phone. I heard nothing, though. 她答應要打電話來,但我沒聽到回信兒。

2) conj. although ; despite the fact that “雖然儘管”, 放在句首或句中不與but連用。

She won the first prize , though none of us had expected it.

8. I listened to one (CD) called Heart Strings. 我聽了一盤名叫心絃的專輯。

called Heart Strings是過去分詞短語做定語,修飾one CD

pretty strange names 相當奇怪的名字pretty,副詞,意思是“相當,十分”

語法:關係代詞who, whom, that, which引導的定語從句

(一)構成:

在句子中,跟在名詞或代詞後面充當該名詞或代詞修飾語的從句叫做定語從句,被修飾的名詞或代詞叫先行詞。定語從句由關係代詞或關係副詞引導。that/which/who/whom/whose/

when/where/why 作為引導詞本身詞義淡化。

(二)用法:

I. 關係代詞who/whom/whose/that/which引導的定語從句。關係代詞在句子中所能作的成份,列表説明。

關係代詞 例句

that在句中作主語或賓語(作賓語可省略) 指

物 A plane is a machine that can fly.(主語)

The noodles(that)I cooked were nice.(賓語)

人 Who is the man that is reading over there?(主語)

The girl(that)we saw yesterday is Jim’s sister.(賓語)

which在從句中

作主語或賓語 指

who、whom在句中作主語或賓語 指

人 The boy who broken the window is called Tom.(主語)

The person to whom you talked is Mr. Li.(賓語)

whose起所有格的作用表示“…的”

作定語 People whose rents have been raised can appeal.

His parents wouldn’t let her marry anyone whose family was poor.

1)who引導,修飾前面指人的名詞或代詞,作該定語從句的主語。

He who doesn’t study hard won’t pass the exam.

Do you know the young woman who is talking with Jim?

2)whom引導,修飾前面指人的名詞或代詞,作該定語從句的賓語,whom在定語從句中可以省略。

Do you know the young woman (whom) Jim is talking with?

3)whose引導,其修飾的詞可以是人也可以是物,在從句中whose作其後接名詞的定語

This is the famous player whose songs are popular all over the world.

4)that引導可指人也可指物,在從句中可以作主語或賓語,作賓語時that可省略。

That is the only movie (that) I’d like to see.

5)which引導,可指人也可指物,在從句中可以作主語或賓語,作賓語時which可省略。

I’m looking for the hat (which) my mother gave to me for my birthday.

補充説明:引導詞that與which用法區別

1)which前面可以有介詞,that不行。

The small village in which we spent our childhood has a lot of big changes.

2)先行詞是all/everything/nothing/something/anything/much/little/few等不定代詞時其後必須用that;作為先行詞的名詞前有序數詞、形容詞最高級以及the only/the very(恰好;正好)/

the just(正好;恰好)等限定語時其後必須用that。

There is nothing that can make him happy again.

That is the first/the best/the only movie (that) I’d like to see.

Many places in the world need more fresh(淡的)water.Every country is trying to find ways to turn salt water into fresh.

Why aren't there many factories like the Symi factory?

In some places,the sun is not hot enough.Or it does not shine every day.

In such places,other ways of heating sea water can be used.These ways cost more money,but they work faster than the sun.By boiling sea water with high heat, a lot of fresh water can be made quickly.
