3. engage

vt. (= hire)

例如:He’d planned to engage a new secretary.

例如:They have engaged a room in the hotel.

vt. 與……訂婚 (與to搭配,常用被動語態)

例如:Tom is engaged to Anne.

vt. 從事, 着手, 忙於 (與in搭配,常用被動語態)

例如:He is engaged (in his work) now.

vt. 允諾,保證 (常與that 從句連用)

例如:Can you engage that he can pay back the money in due time?

vt. 吸引, 引起(興趣), 佔用

例如:His smile engages everyone he meets.

vi. 捲入其中或參加;參與

4. observe

vt. 注意到; 監視; 觀察[測]

例1:I observed him going out.

例2:We are supposed to observe a child's behavior carefully.

vt. 紀念; 慶祝(節日、生日等)

例如:We observe our National Day on October 1st.

vt. 遵守, 奉行(法律、習俗、規章等)

例如:We must observe the rules at school.

5. match

易錯辨析:match與fit 、suit 區別

1) match 多指大小、色調、形狀、性質等方面相合、不相上下、勢均力敵。

例如:These colours don’t match.這些顏色不相配。

2) fit指適合環境、條件、目的、要求等(即某人某物具有在工作、用途上必須的品質)

例如:The ship is well fitted up.這船陳設得好。

fit 也用於衣服、鞋帽等合身、合腳

例如:How do the shoes fit? 這雙鞋穿起來怎麼樣?

3)suit 主要指合乎口味、性格、地位、條件等,從而使人感到愉快、滿意。

例1:No dish suits all tastes. 眾口難調。

例2:It’s difficult to find time that suits everyone. 很難找到一個人人都適合的時間。

易錯辨析: work on 與work at區別

兩者都表示“從事於”的意思,但不可混淆。on和at的選擇要依據其後帶的賓語來確定。如果工作後,賓語本身不發生變化時,用介詞at;如果工作後,賓語本身發生變化時,用介詞on。

例如:He is working (hard) at his lessons.

(lessons本身還是lessons,沒有變化,但他是長進了)

He is working on his bike.

(bike通過他工作後,會由“壞”變“好”,bike本身是變化的)

請選擇:She was working ____ a new story. (A. at B. in)

這裏其實選on或者at 都對,但表達的意思是不同的,用on時,表示“她在修改……”;用at時,表示“她在閲讀……”。

2. go by

(時間)流逝;(機會)放過

例1:As time went by, Einstein’s theory proved true.

例2:Don’t let an opportunity go by.

遵照,依照

例如:Don't go by what she says.

經過(by可用作介詞或副詞);順便走訪

例1:They quickly went by the car. (by作介詞用,後帶賓語the car)

例2:He was in when I went by yesterday.

(go by 用作不及物短語,by為副詞)

4. turn out

例如:Please turn out the lights before you leave the room.

例如:A large group of protesters have turned out.

例如:The rookie turned out to be the best hitter on the team.

例如:The cake turned out beautifully.

8)turn to 開始工作

例如:If you quit dawdling and just turn to, the cleaning will be done in a day.

9)turn up 開大,調高;發現,找到;出現,到達

例1: Please turn up the public-address system so that everyone can hear the news clearly.
