Although Princeton, New Jersey, has a world-famous university, it is still a small quiet town. It is not a place where anyone would expect to see strange characters on the street. That is why one woman will never forget the day in 1940 when, as a child, she suddenly saw a funny-looking man coming towards her. “I remember,” she tells her children now, “how wild his white hair looked---as if it had been electrified. He was short. His clothes seemed to be just pulled on to keep him covered, like a blanket to keep one warm. He had a big nose, a short, thick moustache, and deep-set eyes. He was staring, thinking. He almost knocked me down before he saw me. He gave me a friendly smile, then he walked on and went on thinking. I noticed he had on bedroom slippers. He had forgotten to put on his shoes. He looked as if he had just stepped out of my book of fairy tales and had passed me like a spirit. That night at dinner when I told my family about the strange, funny man I had seen, my father put down his knife and fork, looked at me and said,‘My child, remember this. Today you saw the greatest man in the world!’”

That man was Elbert Einstein. How and why he had come to Princeton, New Jersey is a story of struggle, success, and sadness.

曾經誦記過不少老高中教材的英文片段，這是留下非常深刻記憶的其中一段。想想看，應該有兩個原因：一是當時的教材中的確缺少這樣描寫人物的材料，二是這一段的確寫得很精彩，以至於每每看到愛因斯坦的畫像時總想起這段描寫，而背讀起這段文字時眼前又總是浮現出愛因斯坦的形象。這或許就是我們常常説到的“形象生動”、“栩栩如生”吧。

文段邊憶邊敍，為我們刻畫了一位大鼻深眼、短鬚亂髮、衣着隨意、不修邊幅的人物形象，而他竟然是大名鼎鼎的愛因斯坦，也難怪He was staring, thinking。

Li Tao is a young but “old” teacher in our school. He is often regarded as an old teacher because he has taught chemistry for over 20 years. He is a thin man with thick glasses. The little grey hair and lacking of two teeth make him look older than his real age.

He often says that there are many people giving their seats to him in buses. But in fact, I saw him giving his seat to the woman who takes her baby in her arms more than once. If you have his lively and interesting chemistry lessons, you will find that he is no more than 38 years old

本文敍議結合，對原材料調控有度，取捨得當，是一篇很好的習作。

修改建議：

1.第二段第一句有chinglish之嫌，可改為:…says that many people give their seats to him.

takes改為 who took。

3.最後一句應改為If you have ever had…

A teacher

Li Tao is a young and old teacher in our school. He is regarded as being old for he has been teaching here for 20 years. He is seen, at the same time, as being young as he is now but 38 years old. He doesn’t have much hair on the head. And it is nearly all white. Missing two teeth and wearing thick glasses, he looks older than he really is. He says people often offer their seats to him for his old looks. On the contrary, I myself saw him give up his seat to a woman with a baby in her arms. At least twice he did so. When you attend his interesting and lively classes, you will be sure of his real age ---still young.
