植樹節的由來

世界上有植樹節，首始美國。起初只是在內布拉斯加州，後很快風行全美，其他許多國家紛紛仿效。我國植樹節，始於民國四年(1915年)，當時農商部規定在清明日。

由於各地氣温殊異，四月五日左右的清明節，北方較寒，尚可植樹;而南方已草木萌動，樹木一經移栽，有礙生長，故須另擇日期。民國十七年(1928年)，當時的國民政府中有人提議，孫中山先生是領導推翻幾千年封建王朝，創立民國的'偉大元勛，功懸日月，名垂千古，以他的逝世紀念日三月十二日為植樹節，無論意義與時令均甚合宜。這一提議遂獲得通過。並確定蘭花為首都市花。

1930年3月12日，這一天在南京的國民政府要員齊集南京東郊中山陵，參加第一次“國父逝世紀念植樹儀式”，以後亦每年舉行。但由於當時政府倡而不力，始終未能推廣開來。

解放後，由於人民政府大力提倡，綠化造林取得了很大成績。1979年，中華人民共和國全國人民代表大會常務委員會更進一步確定，將3月12日定為全民植樹節。現在每到這一天，上至中央，下至地方，黨政軍民，工農商學，紛紛出動植樹造林，綠化祖國，形成了既轟轟烈烈，又紮紮實實的羣眾自覺活動。全國許多城市還選了市樹、市花。南京選雪松為市樹、梅花為市花。3月12日植樹節，已深入人心。
